Reconstruction Era, TsUm, the Central Department Store in Kiev (Kyiv), which opened on the 1st May 1939, closed on the 31st of January 2012 for major reconstruction.
The store survived through World War II to the present. The Nazis and the Red Army attempted to destroy it, but it resisted.
During the Soviet era, there were long ques for products sold at Tsum. On the last day, the iconic department store was virtually empty with very few people taking advantage of discounts ranging from 10 % to 70 %.
The remodeled version of TsUM is scheduled to open within 2 years. On the first floor there will be a supermarket and restaurants. The remaining four floors will sell merchandise. The historical facade of the store will be saved, however, the interior of the building will be gutted and completely remodeled.
