Tour De France Stage 16Tour De France Stage 16, Pau, France – Lance Armstrong made the best out of what may be a final attempt glory in today’s 16th are stage of the Tour de France.

With all eyes fixed on Monday, the incident between rival Alberto Contador and Andy Schleck, a renegade powered Armstrong during the mountainous 16th Stage from Bagneres-de-Luchon to Pau.

But he could not end on a picture book; Frenchman Pierrick Fedrigo won a sprint to the breakaway riders. It was the sixth Tour de France win this year – his most since 1997.

According to Radio Shack manager Johan Bruyneel, the Texans had tried to attack power for today’s ride slowly to spare over the weekend.

In the first two Pyrenees mountain stages, he lost nearly 15 minutes.

“That was definitely the target,” Bruyneel said the Associated Press. Radio Shack is now tied for the lead in team standings, with Armstrong’s team-mate Chris Horner – who stuck with him to the finish today – climbing to 14 whole.

The tactic worked
On four mountain tours today, including the devastating Col du Tourmalet, Armstrong was able to pace and even react to attacks, in contrast to last Sunday 8th Stage in Morzine, where he once said: “My tour is finished.”

Today, when the eight-man breakaway on the stage of the last summit driven, the Col d’Aubisque, Armstrong looked and ran as fans waved flags Texas rejuvenated by his side.

But the 38-year-old made sure to remind the fans to the race in mind that this will be his last Tour de France.

Lance Armstrong is over in about four days,” he said, referring to the last stage in Paris on Sunday. But the Lance brand that has extended far beyond the tour is likely to live, even if he finished his 13th Tour this weekend.
