Prime Minister John A. Macdonald

Prime Minister John A. Macdonald, As the country raises a glass to mark the 197th anniversary of the birth of Canada’s first — and arguably still the most interesting — prime minister in Glasgow, the government — in the form of indefatigable local MP Pierre Poilievre — plans to mark the occasion by rechristening the old Bank of Montreal Building at 144 Wellington Street in his honour.

Canadian Heritage Minister James Moore, meanwhile, celebrates the occasion in West Vancouver, of all places, with a visit to Caulfield Elementary School. Not that there’s anything wrong with Vancouver, mind you, it’s just not the first Canadian city that leaps to mind when one thinks of Sir John A. — even if you limit the choices to British Columbia. After all, Victoria can at least point to having elected him to Parliament in 1878.

Meanwhile, the current PM will not, it seems, be publicly observing #SJAMday at all, although his office has announced a (cameras only, of course) photo-op this morning with Chinese Ambassador Zhang Junsai.

On the non-Sir John A. Macdonald ministerial circuit:

Public Safety Minister Vic Toews teams up with Citizenship and Immigration Minister Jason Kenney for synchronized announcements on the “enforcement of immigration laws,” which will be made in Toronto and Montreal, respectively.
ACOA Minister Bernard Valcourt talks up the government’s support for international student recruitment at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax.
Finance Minister Jim Flaherty takes his pre-budget consultation tour to Calgary
