President Obama Kanye West

President Obama Kanye West, While most of the UK were counting down the hours to the weekend, pretty much the entire population of London were getting themselves into a frenzy this Thursday that Kanye West might be appearing East. Thanks to a circulating memo containing the words ‘Watch The Throne’, a map of Shoreditch, and a time and a date, rumours grew that Kanye himself might be performing in East London, and perhaps even with Jay Z. People, naturally, got excited.

In the end, of course, there was no Kanye. There was no Jay Z. There wasn’t even any Lil Chris. Instead there was a video projected onto a wall. Good one, Shoreditch. Besides from unrealistic expectations, Graham Coxon this week has said that there will “definitely” be another Blur album.

Other than that, it’s mostly been a quiet week in the world of music news. For instance, president of the United States of America and most powerful man in the world Barack Obama revealed his fondness for Arcade Fire, Wilco, and Noah & the Whale when he shared a Spotify playlist in preparation of his election campaign. Gorillaz are set to team up with LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy and outkast’s Andre 300. And Jack White revealed the B-side to his recently unveiled solo track ‘Love Interruption’.

Daft Punk look set to record with a funk legend (Nile Rodgers, that is, not the dude with the silly hats from Jamiroquai). Killing Joke have announced details of a new album, as well as letting fans hear a track from it. And Best Coast will play a number of UK live shows this Spring.

Festivals this week came back out of the closet with The xx, Sigur Ros and The Horrors confirmed for Bestival; Best Coast and Arctic Monkeys to play Metallica festival; Josh T Pearson and Beth Jeans Houghton lined up for Apple Cart festival; and Bella Union set to curate the End of the Road line-up. Razorlight will also be playing music in a wood. Cue the eternal question of: if Johnny Borrell sings ‘Golden Touch’ in the forest, does anyone actually give a sh*t?

Bands continue to make sounds with instruments. Husband and wife duo Tennis are letting you listen to the sounds they made with their instruments that are due to appear on their forthcoming record. Field Music did a very similar thing, as did Veronica Falls, Yoofs, Andrew W.K., and The Shins. And the sounds of the instruments that appeared on the Azealia Banks/Scissor Sisters collaboration have been all shaken up in the form of some remixes that surfaced this week.

Artists continue to make noises from instruments in front of people in rooms. Artists like White Denim, Tellison, Explosions In The Sky, and Friends plan to do it in the UK. Artists like Bon Iver, The Shins, Madonna, and Blink 182 plan to do it in the US, Europe, and beyond.

Also this week came the news that Lostprophets are apparently still a band, the evidence that Beyonce really was pregnant all along, and OK GO also completed the soundtrack to their new music video.
