Post Office Closing List

Post Office Closing List, The planned consolidation of more than 260 U.S. Postal Service processing centers, a plan unveiled last week, is separate from the possible closure of mail retail locations, according to a Postal Service spokesperson.

While last Thursday’s announcement marks the end of a study regarding consolidating processing centers, examining the shuttering of Postal Service retail offices is continuing.

Offices in Hunt, Rexville, Centerville, Hume, Little Genesee and Richburg were all included on a previous list of possible closures. Closure candidates are comprised primarily of under-utilized rural offices and urban locations that aren’t producing enough revenue.

The idea of closing approximately 3,700 Postal Service locations was first floated in July 2011 by Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe. A timeframe for making decisions on whether to terminate the offices still hasn’t been established.

Merging processing centers hinges on altering the delivery of local, first-class mail from one to two days, said Karen Mazurkiewicz, communications coordinator for the Postal Service in western New York.

Local mail in the Hornell area is first shipped to Rochester before returning. Consolidating processing centers would boost turnaround time from 12 to 20 hours, said Mazurkiewicz. Longer-distance mail likely wouldn’t be impacted by any changes.
