Poland Train Crash, An express from Warsaw bound for Krakow slammed into another passenger train travelling in the opposite direction near the small town of Szczekociny, 120 miles south of the capital, late on Saturday night.

The force of the impact tore apart carriages at the front of the two trains, reducing them to tangled wrecks.

“This is our most tragic train disaster in many, many years,” said Donald Tusk, the Polish prime minister.

Investigators launched enquiries to determine just why the two trains, carrying around 350 passengers between them, ended up on the same stretch of track – but initial suspicion has fallen on human error. Visiting the crash site on Sunday, Bronislaw Komorowski, the Polish president, said he believed “90 per cent of the accident was due to human error” although he stressed the investigation into the disaster had only just started.
