PJ HarveyPJ Harvey, For years the orthodox view that had to be awarded the Mercury of Britain was an achievement of prestige and all, but the kryptonite career. With good reason.

Yes, Arctic Monkeys went well. But where Badly Drawn Boy? O Gomez? What is Primal Scream, Speech Debelle, Antony and the Johnsons, Elbow, Klaxons and xx The next step? Dizzee Rascal, anyone? M People? Well, that’s what it was until PJ Harvey won her second of the blighters a couple of months ago and has been doing really well.

The so-called curse has lost its bite, it seems. Anyway, Harvey, who was last in Australia in 2008, was announced last night in another ceremony headed by Sydney Festival 2012. She will be touring the album (Let England vibration) who won her gong no.2, backed by her band, which features former Bad Seed Mick Harvey, John Parish and Jean-Marc Butty.

Harvey is the last great act of notice of race out of the office of the festival, joining the great collaboration Indigenous Eora am, Gideon Obarzanek and thick Move Assembly and Miau Miau with Little Match Girl, the latter for the Spiegeltent fun and strange.

Harvey, who will play the State Theatre on January 18 and 19, also appear in Hobart on 21 January as part of the festival of the Mona Violent Femmes bassist Brian Ritchie Foma.
