Pittsburgh Shooting

March 9, 2012 by · Comments Off on Pittsburgh Shooting

Pittsburgh Shooting, The medical examiner says a man killed by a gunman at a University of Pittsburgh psychiatric clinic was a 25-year-old staff member.

Michael Schaab’s (SHAWBZ) mother tells The Associated Press he worked in the geriatric unit at the clinic and was recently engaged. Mary Schaab says she has no reason to believe he knew the shooter, who was apparently shot dead by campus police and remains unidentified.

She says the family watched Thursday’s news coverage of the shootings for hours without realizing her son had been killed. They assumed he was safe because he worked on an upper floor, not near the first floor lobby where the unidentified gunman shot seven people. Another was injured, but not by gunfire.

Schaab says a state trooper arrived to tell her that her son was killed late Thursday night.

She says her only other child, Nancy Schaab, was slain at age 26 during a domestic dispute in October 2010.

The other victims are all expected to survive.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP’s earlier story is below.

The University of Pittsburgh psychiatric clinic gunman wasn’t carrying identification and his fingerprints have yielded no clues to his identity, the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office said Friday.

The gunman’s fingerprints were run through a nationwide database used by police and federal agencies, including the FBI and CIA, to no avail. City police have yet to say what motivated the gunman, who was apparently shot dead by campus police in Thursday’s shooting rampage at the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic.

The man had two semiautomatic pistols when he shot seven people – one of whom died and whose name has also yet to be released because the medical examiner’s office had yet to notify his father by Friday morning. An eighth person was hurt, but officials say that injury was not gunshot-related. The surviving victims are all expected to recover.
