On This Day In History, June 4, 1914

Captain Eugene Weyant and the men comprising the crack drill team of Auburn Canton, No. 61, of the Odd Fellows fraternity did not have their trip to Rochester in vain this week at the State Convention of the Patriarchs Militant.

In the competitive drill yesterday in which four Cantons competed, the Auburn men captured second prize and as a result their treasury is enriched $125. Canton Lincoln of Syracuse captured the first prize and the $200 awarded for the drill championship.

June 4, 1954

A gingerbread contest was held by Auburn Grange at the June meeting on Tuesday as the IOOF Temple Prizes went to Mrs. Clarence S. Cuykendall and Mrs. Lewis W. Phillips. Robert and Frank Holman explained various military observances and demonstrated how a flag is correctly folded.

A legislative report was given by Worth Phillips. Miss Flora Daniels was appointed chairman of a picnic to be held in July.

June 4, 2004

Edward J. Ide Jr. was named recipient of the 2004 Community Leadership Award during Leadership Cayuga graduation ceremonies Wednesday. The award is given annually to recognize a graduate of the Leadership Cayuga program who has exhibited leadership qualities.

Ide is a 1997 graduate of the program, and was elected supervisor of Aurelius in 1999, and re-elected in 2001 and 2003.

Ide said his experience in Leadership Cayuga “led to a breakthrough paradigm” in recognizing his own strengths and weaknesses.

“Three of the organizations I have been involved in were in or about to be in periods of crisis,” said Ide. “I firmly believe that my Leadership Cayuga experience prepared me to provide meaningful input into the return of stability of all three of those groups.”

Leadership Cayuga is a program of the Cayuga County Chamber of Commerce.

The Cayuga County Chamber of Commerce received Jon Szkolnik as its spring intern. Szkolnik is a senior at Auburn High School and is currently enrolled in the Computer Application Technology and Web Development Program (CAT/WEB) at Cayuga – Onondaga BOCES.

He worked as an intern for the Chamber from April 27 through May 14. He was mentored by the Chamber staff on various computer application duties.

Szkolnik received an award of appreciation from the Chamber upon the completion of his internship.
