Airport Delays, Continental, Delta and United Airlines to prepare for disruptions severe winter weather this weekend.

Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL) will allow customers whose flight plans may be affected by the severe winter in the Midwest of the United States to modify their schedules to travel to Sunday, December 12.

United Airlines and Continental Airlines (NYSE: UAL) are permitted on passenger flights to or from the region, including Chicago and Cleveland, through 13 December to postpone if their flights are affected by weather.

The three airlines to inform passengers traveling through the Midwest to think of a diversion or defer their travel now to avoid the inconvenience of flight delays and cancellations.

Normally, such changes would be borne by rebooking but the airlines will waive this fee once, because of the foul weather that was expected.

Delta, Travel to the changed routes must begin by December 14, 2010, and changes to the original air ticket or destination could mean a fare increase. Any difference in airfares between the original ticket and the new one will be charged at the time of rebooking.

The areas most likely to be affected by weather include Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

Customers whose flights are canceled may request a refund.

Delta proactively reduces flight schedules to and from affected airports to minimize delays during the storm, including its hub in Cincinnati, Detroit and Minneapolis-St. Paul. Delta will continue to monitor the weather situation and provide the latest weather updates on its website.

Customers should check their flight status before arriving at the airport.

Delays and cancellations are possible within the Continental hub at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport hub and the Kingdom at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago.

Regular customers on flights to or from the affected area, including Cleveland and Chicago, may postpone their trip with a date or time change time through December 13.

If a flight has been canceled, a refund in the form of upfront payment may be requested.
