Sumatra EarthquakeSumatra Earthquake, A 12-year-old has died in an earthquake of 6.6 magnitudes that struck Sumatra, Indonesia, Tuesday morning, the mayor said, according to the Associated Press.

The word came from Maura Sakti, Mayor Subulussalam, who broke the news to the local station TVOne, according to the Associated Press.

No further details were available.

Singkil residents, an area near the epicenter, said the utility poles fell and crashed into houses.

“My wife was screaming, my children crying,” Burhan Mardiansyah, 37, is quoted as saying. “We saw the walls begin to crack and everything inside the house was falling.”

Hundreds of patients have been evacuated from a hospital in Medan, Sumatra, near the epicenter of the earthquake on the morning of Tuesday, the Associated Press reported. The U.S. Geological Survey rated the tremor as 6.6 magnitudes.

Some of the patients in wheelchairs and others had drops of infusion connected to the arms, reports from news organizations.

Home residents and people in hotels were also seen fleeing in panic.

Telephone calls to officials Singkil, an area believed to be a blow, have gone unanswered, according to the Associated Press.

An earthquake of 6.6 or 6.7 magnitudes has hit northern Sumatra in Indonesia, although there is no report of damage or injuries, BNO News and other news organizations are reporting.

The quake struck early on Tuesday after local and was centered about 62 miles southwest of Medan, Sumatra, BNO reports.

The Tsunami Warning Center Pacific said it had not been generated by the tsunami, according to BNO.

The center, based in Hawaii said the quake was too far inland to cause a tsunami, reports Khaleej Times.

Indonesia is part of the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, where a meeting of continental plates generates high seismic activity.

A 9.1-magnitude earthquake in December 2004 centered near Sumatra triggered a massive tsunami that killed more than 220,000 people around the Indian Ocean, the Times.
