New Zealand Quake, The Anglican cathedral in the earthquake-hit New Zealand city of Christchurch is to be demolished.
Authorities in the city have decided the building cannot be repaired following last year’s disaster and the subsequent aftershocks.

The decision has been met with sadness as well as anger, with some conservationists vowing to fight the move.

The spire of the 131-year-old cathedral – a symbol of the South Island city – collapsed in the February 2011 quake that killed 185 people.

The Bishop of Christchurch, Victoria Matthews, said: “What we need to do is bring the walls down to a safe level which is probably about 2-3 metres.

“There will be no bulldozers, no wrecking ball. This will be done with deep respect and love. There will be a significant attempt at heritage retrieval.”
