New York CosmosNew York Cosmos, Paul Scholes was on the record that marked his farewell to Manchester United with a goal in the 6-0 victories over the New York Cosmos as former England midfielder said goodbye to a packed Old Trafford on Friday.

The 36-year-old, who retired at the end of last season after making 676 appearances in his career of 17 years and winner of the 10 Premier League titles, opened the scoring with a fierce 20-yard strike after only eight minutes in the witness game.

“I gave them a decent memory,” said Scholes, who was accompanied by Pele on the pitch after the game to say his farewell.

The occasion also saw another united legend, Eric Cantona, returning to Old Trafford in his new position as director of football in the Cosmos.

The Frenchman received Scholes before kickoff and was given a reception accorded stronger than Pele, who is also part of the Cosmos campaign to win a place in Major League Soccer in 2013.

The Cosmos Club was a pioneer in the 1970s in the U.S. when his team gave Pele, as well as the likes of Johan Cruyff.
