Neil Warnock, Leeds United have appointed Neil Warnock as manager until the end of the 2012-13 season.

The 63-year-old, sacked by QPR last month, replaces Simon Grayson, who left the club a fortnight ago, and faces the task of reigniting Leeds’ play-off hopes – the club are currently six points adrift of sixth-placed Birmingham having played a game more.

The Leeds United chairman, Ken Bates, said: “We believe the appointment is arguably the most important we have made. The objective was to appoint a manager who had for a proven track record of getting teams promoted and in Neil we have a man whose record is second to none. We want to be in the Premier League and we will support in the quest to get us there.”

The appointment is likely to prove a controversial one with Leeds fans – Warnock and the home terraces at Elland Road have not always had an easy relationship, particularly during his eight-year spell in charge of Sheffield United.

Leeds have, though, appointed something of a promotion expert. Warnock has taken Notts County, Sheffield United and, most recently, QPR into the Premier League and won play-off finals while with Huddersfield and Plymouth Argyle.

Warnock added: “I feel I have one big challenge left in me and believe Leeds is a club that should be in the Premier League. I want to be the man who is able to deliver this for a set of fans who never cease to amaze me with their numbers and their loyalty.

“Having met with Ken Bates it was an easy decision to take up the challenge and with his support, we share the same vision of getting Leeds United in the Premier League.”
