National Geographic Twins, Life for 9-year-old identical twins Emily and Kate Martin of Whitehall has created some photogenic moments for the pair, including a photo feature this month in the National Geographic magazine.
“I was nervous and excited at the same time,” said Emily of the venture that placed her, Emily and their parents, Kyle and Debbie Martin, in Washington D.C. in September for a photo shoot of the twins by celebrity photographer Martin Schoeller and his crew for the recent magazine edition.

For the Martins, the experience and photo finish were picture perfect, and the magazine featuring the twins’ photographs is now available on newsstands around the world, according to Debbie Martin.

“We’re having friends and family from around the United States and other countries send us photographs of them with the magazine to help bring it home for the girls that it’s a global magazine – that it’s more than just Whitehall, Michigan,” Martin said.

The featured photograph of Emily and Kate in the edition is nestled between pages 38 and 65 as part of a feature article by Peter Miller about twin life and organizations and events such as the Twins Day Festival in Twinsburg, Ohio.

“The article focuses on twins and their contributions to science – really looking at sets where one twin may be born with a disability and the other not,” Martin said in an email to The Chronicle.

It was at the twins festival in Twinsburg last summer that Kate and Emily got their photo opportunity to appear in the “global” magazine,” according to Martin.

For years, the twins with their parents and younger sister, Kyleigh, have attended the festival and brought home top honors in various categories for twins. Last year at the festival the twins came upon the “quick, Polaroid” casting calls at the event by the magazine for their feature story about twins and the Martins decided to let their twins go for it, Martin said.

“They were one set of 25 (out of the original 300+ sets) that were selected to return and be photographed by celebrity photographer Martin Schoeller,” she said. “A few months later, the girls were called and flown out to Washington, D.C., to be photographed for the cover. They were one of five sets selected. Although the girls are not on the cover, their photograph and interview contributions are in the piece.”
