National Enquirer Whitney

National Enquirer Whitney, The National Enquirer, the scandalous US supermarket check-out weekly, has acted true to form by publishing a picture of Whitney Houston (allegedly) lying in an open coffin.

Its cover picture, which I am not showing here, purports to show her in a gold casket in a funeral home. The Daily Mail pixelled it out too.

The cover picture has prompted a storm of protest, with people claiming it is, variously, shocking, intrusive, disturbing, in poor taste, offensive to her family, and so on. A line has been crossed said a Washington Post writer.

Not really. The Enquirer has form for this sort of photo. In 1977, it famously published a picture of Elvis Presley in his casket. The issue caused outrage – and then sold a record-making 6.5m copies.

More recently, a photo of Michael Jackson’s lifeless body was republished by many newspapers after it was shown to the jury during the trial of his doctor Conrad Murray.

There has been an intense interest in Houston since her death. Her funeral, which was held on Saturday, was live streamed by the Associated Press with permission from the family. It got 2m unique visitors.

CNN, one of the cable networks to broadcast the funeral, averaged 5m viewers in the course of the three-and-a-half hour screening.

Other outlets, including Entertainment Weekly and ABC News, live blogged the service. Wire services, like Getty and the AP, took photos of guests outside the funeral service and of Houston’s casket as it was carried in.

National Enquirer Whitney Houston, Whitney Houston on Feb. 9, just two days before she was found dead. Whitney Houston fans expressed shock and outrage Wednesday after the National Enquirer printed an image of the iconic singer in an open casket on its cover.

The morbid photo, purportedly taken inside the family’s private viewing at the Whigham Funeral Home in Newark, N.J., last Friday, shows Houston’s body lying in her half-opened, polished bronze casket.

It shows the dead pop star wearing what looks like a purple dress along with a brooch pinned to her chest and an earing sparkling in her ear.

The headline claims she was buried wearing $500,000 worth of jewels and gold slippers on her feet.

Facebook and Twitter users lashed out at the tabloid, calling the move trashy and shameful.

“MADD at who ever sold Whitney Houston’s pic of her in a casket,” reality star Evelyn Lozada, from VH1’s “Basketball Wives,” wrote on Twitter.

“Whoever sold the photo of Whitney Houston in her coffin to the National Enquirer is a vile, twisted, evil and unscrupulous sub-human,” London-based fan Christiana Mbakwe tweeted.

Even celebrity blogger Perez Hilton called it a “tasteless, insensitive, morbid thing to do” on his eponymous website.

Of course, the death photo is hardly without precedent. The National Enquirer famously ran a photo of Elvis in his coffin in 1977.

According to the Daily Mail, the National Enquirer claims the photo was taken at Whigham Funeral Home in Newark, New Jersey. The tabloid did not specify who took the picture, which has provoked shock on Twitter.

Members of Houston’s family attended a private wake at the funeral home last Friday. Over 1,000 friends and relatives, including Aretha Franklin, Oprah Winfrey and Mariah Carey, gathered for a larger service for the pop legend the next day. Houston was found unresponsive in the Beverly Hilton on the eve of the Grammy Awards. She died at the age of 48.
