Muammar GaddafiMuammar Gaddafi, Muammar Gaddafi was found hiding in a sewer while trying to flee the fighting in the National Transitional Council had invaded his hometown and final stronghold on Thursday.

According to several sources, former Libyan dictator may have tried to escape from their last stronghold in the morning in a convoy of vehicles after weeks of fierce resistance.

However, he was stopped by a NATO air attack and captured, perhaps three or four hours later, after clashes with fighters who found NTC hidden in a sewer drain.

Moments later, his bloody body was stripped and shown worldwide mobile video.

NATO said its warplanes fired on a convoy near Sirte about 8:30 am (0630 GMT), hitting two military vehicles in the group, but could not confirm that Gaddafi had been a passenger.

Accounts of his enemies suggested his capture and death shortly after injury, may have taken place around noon.

A son of Gaddafi, Saif al-Islam heir, was in general, they believed.

NTC Mlegta official told Reuters that Gaddafi had been wounded in both legs in the morning when he tried to flee in the convoy that NATO planes attacked

“He was also beaten on the head,” he said. “There was a lot of shots against their group, and died.”

There was no shortage of fighters in Sirte NTC claiming to have seen die, although many accounts were in conflict.

Libyan television carried video of two drainage tubes, about three feet wide, where it was said that the fighters had cornered a man who always inspires fear and admiration from around the world.

After rising in February this long disaffected country around Benghazi – inspired by the movements of the Arab spring that toppled the leaders of neighboring countries Tunisia and Egypt – the revolt against Gaddafi ground slowly across the country before a dramatic turnaround saw the fall of Tripoli, in August.
