Black Swan NatalieBlack Swan Natalie, In Darren Aronofsky’s film, “Black Swan”, Natalie Portman plays Nina, who has won the lead role in the new production of New York Ballet “Swan Lake.” Nina danced virginal white swan gracefully, but is awkward when it comes to the black swan passionate.

Sheltered by her mother a dancer, and not just her Manhattan apartment, Nina is encouraged by its director to discover their inner black swan. But in the discovery and unleash their passions primary jealousy and paranoia, contempt and hatred, Nina breaks her sanity. At the end of her perfect performance on opening night, as the audience chants her name in the rapture, Nina is bleeding in the back of the stage.

Seeing Nina has stabbed herself, the director asks “why” with a look of shock pain. “I wanted to be perfect,” whispered Nina.

Nina was in the back of my mind when I sat in my office on Sunday afternoon before the start of school. Sitting with me around a conference table were a new student and her mother, and Rebecca, a student who has studied with us since a year ago. That same day, this student’s mother had called me again, anxiously telling me that her daughter wanted to leave. I look forward to the start of school, I explained to the mother that her daughter was probably overcome with anxiety about enrolling in a program to test.

When we all called that night, this new student told us. She has never lived away from home, and is accustomed to the strict competitive schools, where her classmates never even thought about leaving, much less discuss it in front of their roommates, which is what a couple of her new teammates made during the week of compulsory military training before classes begin. For a week, this new student was tormented by doubts and concerns: Will her new teammates will focus? They are habits of their classmates’ bad infect her? Teachers dumb by the material?

Rebecca was sitting right across from the new student, and explained that a year ago, she was sitting in exactly the same seat. A year later, she is aware that the ability to remember someone’s name and be friends with them is more important than the ability to memorize math equations math contests and win. Previously, Rebecca expect and demand that all be like her peers, but now understands that in a class with difference and diversity, can learn from both their peers and their teachers.

Perfection is a dangerous obsession, Rebecca explained to this new student. Rebecca is mentioned a cousin who finished second in the Gaokao in the province of Liaoning, and now is in the labor force is all and all so disgusting.

Empathy is critical to a reading program in English well, and it is important to help students in their struggle to understand the point of view of characters in books ranging from Michael Lewis’sMoneyball John Wyndham’s Day of Triffids.

After a year, has surprised and inspired by the generous and compassionate students have become. At school, Rebecca was in a class of more than academic difficulties, and occasionally returned to see their classmates to find them remains the same while you are transformed from fear change and uncertainty to welcome them. After a year, she’s a completely different person.

And that’s exactly what this new student is afraid. That night, she spoke with passion of her quest to be a great painter, while showing a complete disregard for her new colleagues: “All the girls talk about is makeup and boyfriends,” she cried to us. “And the kids – they want to be together on weekends. Can not stand!

I sympathized with the artistic obsession of this new student, so I patiently explained to be a brilliant artist, not just to spend some one purpose of her art, as Nina had done in ‘Black Swan’. Ultimately, it requires open-ended decades of research and learning, so that failure, change and difference that can be molded in a way that will allow the import of various ways of thinking about her art, and create somewhat surprising and striking.

At these words, faced with this new student became less tense, and she smiled slowly.

I could have said it would introduce the books and activities to expand their comfort zone, and to teach that empathy is not about losing your individuality. It is essentially reach others for imported wood and steel and concrete to build domestic support for the architecture of mind, which individuality can stand and grow. Empathy is constantly expanding one’s mental framework, which allows the learning of new ideas, but also the classification of primary passions.

Nina went crazy because she delved deeper into the innermost core of the furious passions, without the support they can offer empathy. In short, he fell from the tip, because I had friends to hang.

But I have not said anything about it because I could see he was not smiling because he agreed with me, but because I looked like her begging to stay. Throughout her life, as an excellent student, had been praised by their teachers and parents, and this praise was reduced only to their mindset to the point that now runs the risk of implosion.

I was hoping that Rebecca hold the hand of this new student from the other side of the table will bring more. But is the election of the new student the opportunity to cross, and ultimately, my responsibility is to those who have chosen to do so.

So I sent this new student and her mother away, knowing that probably never see again. And I began to prepare for my first lesson for the new semester.
