He said Mandela, who was the first democratically elected President of South Africa, has changed the course of history.

“From the time Nelson Mandela was released from prison Rolihlahla on February 11, 1990, we knew that South Africa would be a different place,” the president said.

“He showed us that despite the oppression of racial divide and the challenges this nation has lived, is not only possible but necessary to embrace and to reconcile the South African people.”

U.S. President Barack Obama greeted him, saying that set the standard for the provision of public officials around the world.

“Michelle and my daughters, Sasha and Malia, recently met Madiba during an official visit to South Africa, which focused on service, youth leadership, education and healthy living. His time with Madiba was the most moving part of your trip “Obama said in a statement issued by the U.S. diplomatic mission South Africa.

“The legacy of Mandela is an example of wisdom, strength and grace, and on the anniversary of his birth, we salute the example of his life.”

Obama said the U.S. had the honor of joining the United Nations 192 Member States in 2009 to declare July 18th International Day Nelson Mandela, in recognition of his contribution to peace and freedom.

On this day, people are encouraged to do 67 minutes of community service in honor of Mandela, who spent 67 years of his life to public service.

Machel was among those who participated. She spent the morning working on an orchard in Qunu multipurpose center, then cut a large birthday cake and shared it with children Qunu.

Wife of Zuma, Madiba Thobeka-Zuma had intended to spend her afternoon of pampering cancer patients in Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital as part of Nelson Mandela Day.

African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) has urged young people to change their profile pictures on social networking to the images of Mandela.

“The League of the ANC Youth especially encourages all young people to change their profile pictures on Facebook, Twitter, BBM [Black Berry messaging] in it, and all sites MXit social images of Comrade Nelson Mandela” said the ANC Youth League spokesman Floyd Shivambu.
