Miss America 2011, (AP) – At age 17, Nebraska too young to vote has captured enough votes to win the crown of Miss America, to revive her hopes of going to law school and eventually become a politician.

“I want to be there making sure I get up for what is right, stand up for integrity and honesty,” Teresa Scanlan told the Associated Press on Saturday evening after becoming the first Miss America Nebraska.

She won a scholarship to 50,000 and the reign of one year in one of the most visible positions very young woman might seek.

Scanlan captured the hearts of seven judges, after a night of playing the piano, walking on stage in Las Vegas in a white robe and a black bikini, and security prevail, saying the public’s right to knowledge when it comes to leaks from the government.

She said she will register to vote as an Independent after the age of 18 next month and work on goals by going to law school and perhaps become a prosecutor and judge .

“At this point, lawyers and politicians are looked down upon and have a terrible reputation of being greedy and power hungry and I really think it’s important for people who have their heart and mind to good up into these positions of power, “Scanlan told the AP.

“When I talk to kids my age, I do not find many people who are interested in that, because many are just turned off the idea,” she said. “I think it’s important that we receive much of my generation ready to step in and get into those positions. ”

Scanlan beat 52 beauty queens from other U.S. states, plus Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and the District of Columbia. She said she was a little worried after a preliminary interview with the judges and hoped they would think 17 years might do the job.

Obviously, they did.

“And I’ve never had a cookie on my trip here,” said Scanlan.

She is the youngest Miss America pageant since the implementation of age limits in 1938. Rosemary LaPlanche was vice-champion in 1940 and easily won the crown in 1941 despite being a month too young to compete, according to the website of the contest.

Scanlan said age did not matter that the parade celebrated its 90th birthday, if she thought that her age could have made her an outsider.

“We were on an equal footing,” she said. “From 17 to 24, which can be a huge age range. But with these girls, they are all at the highest level imaginable.”

Miss Arkansas Alyse Eady and 25,000 won as first runner-up, while Miss Hawaii Jale Fuselier and 20,000 won for third place.

Scanlan, a student recently graduated from the city in western Nebraska Gering, plans to study U.S. policy to Patrick Henry College in Virginia, after her reign as Miss America. Scanlan said she intended to defer her enrollment at the university until it ends its reign with the crown.

During the pageant on national television, Scanlan answered a question on Wikileaks by saying that the U.S. should focus on safety first.

“You know when he arrived at this situation, it was actually based on espionage, and when it comes to the security of our nation, we must focus on safety first, then the right of peoples to know, because it is so important that everyone who is secure our borders and we can not let things like this happen, and they must be handled carefully, “she said.

Scanlan said that the question was easier for her than generic, because it has regularly discussed current events with her family since she was young.

The candidates – all states and the District of Columbia, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico – began the show by dancing up the aisles, while wearing cocktail dresses silver.

A panel of seven judges eyes to the appearance and fitness. The competition included an evening gown, talent and interview the parties, with the elimination of 15 finalists, then 12, then 10, five and finally the winner along the path.

The judges selected the three best players over Miss Oklahoma Emoly West Ashley Melnick Miss Texas, Miss Rhode Island Deborah Saint-Vil, Miss Utah Christina Lowe, Miss Washington Jacquie Brown, Miss Arizona Kathryn Bulkley, Miss Virginia Uze Caitlin and Miss California Arianna Afsar.

Fans voted Miss New York and Miss Claire Buffie Delaware Kayla Martell.

And in a twist for the first contest, young women have chosen two finalists themselves, Miss Kentucky and Miss Oregon Djuan Trent Stephenie Steers Denise.

In her introduction to the audience, Bulkley dedicated her performance to U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot in the head last week in Tucson. Bulkley Giffords called her mentor.

The Miss America Organization bills itself as the provider of the country’s largest scholarship for women, and 349,000 in prizes this year at the national level.

In honor of the 90th anniversary of the pageant, 47 former Miss Americas gathered on stage before crowning Scanlan.

The most controversial – 1945 Bess Myerson winner, who was later convicted of tax evasion, and 1984 winner Vanessa Williams, who was dethroned when nde* photographs of her emerged after her coronation – were not present.
