Connecticut Power Plant Explosion,Middletown ct Power Plant | UssPost:A gas-fired power plant on the River Road in Middletown exploded earlier today resulting in at least two deaths.
Four people pulled from the rubble also have life-threatening injuries and a source at the scene said the death toll will rise.
It’s not sure how many other people have been injured, but officials said there were “mass casualties.”
Some of the injured were treated at the scene. It’s not known how many, if any, were taken to hospitals, although the state’s mass casualty plan was put into effect and hospitals, including St. Raphael’s in New Haven and Yale-New Haven, were told to clear beds for any injured.
State police are at the plant with search and rescue dogs, but it appears it has turned from a search and rescue mission to a recovery operation, according to a source at the scene.
First reports were that about 100 people were inside the building at the time of the explosion, but a number of employees did leave around 6:30 a.m. after finishing the night shift. It’s estimated that about 60 people were still inside the building when the blast occurred around l1:30 a.m. It’s not known how many made it out.
At least 30 ambulances responded to the scene, as well as the two Lifestar helicopters.
A witness said the explosion caused a “massive ball of fire 40 to 50 feet into the air.”
Gov. M. Jodi Rell activated the Emergency Operations Center in Hartford and is being staffed by: the state Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security (DEMHS), Department of Public Health (DPH), the National Guard and the State Police. DPH is providing tents at the scene for shelter and medical triage.
Rell is on her way to the scene.
Windows in nearby homes were blown out by the blast.
People living miles away from the plant, some in Meriden and Wallingford, reported they felt the earth shake as a result of the explosion.
One Guilford resident said it felt like a “mild earthquake” and called police, who said it was due to the power plant explosion, 16 miles away.
