Michonne Walking Dead, AMC aired the second season finale of The Walking Dead Sunday night, so if you haven’t seen that yet, you might consider this story a spoiler.

The network announced Monday that the mysterious character who was introduced during the finale was Michonne, the sword-wielding fan favorite from the original comic books. Danai Gurira, who starred in Treme, will play the character, according to The Wrap. Gurira’s face was barely visible under the character’s trademark hood, but series creator Robert Kirkman said on The Talking Dead, the live show that airs after each episode, that Gurira won the role.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Michonne made her first appearance in issue 19 of the comic book series. The character is still in the comics, which is up to its 94th issue, so it’s likely that Gurira could be a long-time member of the cast. Michonne helps Rick and his group fight the Governor.

Last month, Deadline reported that British actor David Morrissey was cast to play the Governor, who becomes Rick’s main opponent. Morrissey will be a regular cast member for season three.

Michonne’s appearance on the series comes after one of the other main characters, Jon Bernthal’s Shane, was killed off. Rumors that Bernthal would be leaving the series began when The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that the actor was interested in being cast in the pilot for L.A. Noir. The TNT pilot is being developed by Frank Darabont, who was the showrunner on The Walking Dead in season one before being replaced. Darabont has been picked to executive produce L.A. Noir, as well as write and direct the pilot.
