Michigan State Iowa, Travis Trice’s ankle hurt so badly during warm-ups on Friday that he didn’t think he could play against Iowa in the Big Ten tournament quarterfinals. That was before the trainer gave him a shot to numb it in the locker room.

The Michigan State freshman point guard sprained his ankle against Ohio State on Feb. 11. He hasn’t been the same since. With 14:26 left in the first half of Friday’s 92-75 victory, Trice checked into the game and immediately reminded everyone why he is crucial to a deep postseason run.

He quickly found center Derrick Nix for a lay-up. A minute later, he grabbed a rebound and started a break that led to another lay-up, this one by forward Draymond Green. Trice played 24 minutes, a season high and the most he had played since racking up 22 at Illinois in late January. Trice scored nine points and had three assists. MSU, the top seed, advances to meet No. 4 seed Wisconsin in Saturday’s semifinals.
