MCD, Lieutenant-Governor Teje-ndra Khanna on Monday backed the government’s decision to split the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), saying it will strengthen municipal governance.

Smaller municipal bodies would address the day-to-day problems of citizens more expeditiously and effectively, Khanna said in his customary address on the first day of the Assembly’s Winter Session.

The five-day session got off to a stormy start with Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators accusing the government of being riddled with corruption and demanding the strengthening of the Lokayukta.

Opposition legislators were on their feet shouting slogans even before Speaker Yoganand Shastri formally declared the session open. Leader of Opposition VK Malhotra said the government has been evasive on a lot of issues, including irregularities in selecting unauthorised colonies for legalisation to corruption and price rise.
