Mayan Calender

Mayan CalenderMayan Calender, While New Year celebrations rock throughout the world, there is a completely different world that believes that this is the last New Year party. Those people are gathering in large numbers to Mayan sites in Mexico and Honduras.

Doomsday countdown clocks are ticking in those countries where, according to a so-called Mayan prediction, the world will end in 2012. The clocks are set to hit zero on December 21, 2012.

According to the ancient Mayan calendar, next year’s winter solstice marks the end of a 144,000-day cycle. This cycle, which begins at the mythical Maya creation date, has already been repeated 12 times. The 13th will end in 2012, capping a full 5,200-year Mayan cycle of creation. The talk is that a rogue planet that has been dubbed “Nibiru” or “Planet X” is supposedly aimed at Earth and will hit the Earth on December 21, 2012.

However, many scholars and scientists say that there is no evidence and call such theories ridiculous. An expert at NASA said that if such a planet was headed towards Earth by Dec. 21, 2012, it would already be visible to the n*ked eye.

“Nibiru is ridiculous because it doesn’t exist,it never existed as anything other than a figment of the imagination by pseudo-scientists who don’t seem bothered by a complete lack of evidence,” astronomer Don Yeomans, manager of NASA’s Near-Earth Object program office at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California told.

The Mayan predictions though has no certain proof of its happening, has generated good business at least for Honduras and Mexico. The president of Honduras recently joined the Mayan community celebrations to kick off the countdown.

Street vendors in Mexico City who make their living as traditional healers or selling Mayan calendars and Aztec souvenirs say that they are skeptical that the world is going to end any time soon, but say there may be benefits from all the hype. More than 50 million tourists are expected to visit Mayan sites during 2012 and paying for the commercial sensationalism.

The Dubai-based fashion chain Splash has launched a calendar inspired by a doomsday forecast based on the Mayan calendar.

2012 End Of The World

2012 End Of The World2012 End Of The World, The predictions of doom and gloom have been coming quickly for some time. Hollywood blockbusters, History Channel documentaries, and a plethora of websites and books of all tell us of dire things that might happen on December 21, 2012.

The day is considered astrologically significant for two reasons. First, it is the winter solstice when the sun appears at its lowest point in the southern sky. The solar nadir is it expected to align the Earth and Sun with the center of the Milky Way galaxy. It also roughly coincides with the solar maximum — a period of peak activity on the sun.

Second, it is the most popular and accepted date for the end of the Mayan Long Count calendar. Many people involved in astrology, numerology, and other such practices believe that the Maya were possessed of a secret knowledge that foretold when the end times would be.

Of course, astronomers explain that all this is nonsense.

First, there is no secret cosmic energy which radiates any differently between the center of the galaxy, the Sun and Earth, when they appear to be in some sort of alignment. In fact, the very alignment itself is an optical illusion caused by the orientation of the planet, (axial tilt) and the ultra-slow wobble of the Earth on its axis, a phenomenon known as “procession.”

As for the solar maximum, the Sun appears to have a natural 11 year cycle of activity during which sunspots and solar flares become common, then virtually nonexistent.

Interestingly, the Sun’s average activity is now substantially less than what scientists believe it has been in the past. Some even believe that the sun is experiencing what is known as a “minimum” in its cycles. Such minimums have happened before, and they may last decades or even hundreds of years. They are perfectly natural. So in 2012, the Sun isn’t even expected to be as active as it has been in decades past; no need to worry about solar flares engulfing the Earth (they cannot do so anyway–Earth is much too far away).
