Matthew McConaughey

Matthew McConaugheyMatthew McConaughey, Steven Soderbergh’s Magic Mike will easily be the most beefcake-filled movie of the new year, a story about a male strip starring a veritable who’s-who of shirtless showstoppers, including Matthew McConaughey, Alex Pettyfer, Joe Mangianello and Channing Tatum, whose life story inspired the film. And all four of those slabs of beef are on display in the first photo from the film, released today by Warner Bros. You might have a little trouble telling three of them apart, dressed alike in military pants and wifebeaters, but McConaughey is unmissable as the guy in the patriotic top hat. Check him and the rest out below, and click for a high-res version that shows off maximum ab definition.

Starring Pettyfer as the character inspired by Tatum, trying to scratch out a living and make his way in the male stripper world, Magic Mike includes a few other hunks like Batt Bomer, along with some token women to be played by Wendi McLendon-Covey and Olivia Munn. It’s a little unclear how silly the movie will be intentionally– is it a Burlesque kind of over-the-top melodrama, or knowing Soderbergh’s tricky sense of humor, will it be something more tongue in cheek? It will be Soderbergh’s second film to hit theaters in 2011 alone, coming six months after the January release of Haywire, which is one of the few bright spots in next month’s otherwise grim release schedule. And after Magic Mike, which is set for release on January 29 next year, we might have to wait a little while longer for what Soderbergh does next– among threats of retirement, he’s planning to make his long-developing Liberace biopic with Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, and now that he’s walked away from an adaptation of The Man from U.N.C.L.E., he’s also weighing a project called The Bitter Pill. It’s unclear when either of those films might get going, so what I’m saying is Magic Mike will be your last Soderbergh for a while; enjoy it when it arrives.
