Maryland Wake Forest, Terrell Stoglin scored 25 points and pulled down seven rebounds, lifting the eighth-seeded Maryland Terrapins over the ninth-seeded Wake Forest Demon Deacons, 82-60, in the first round of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament.

Nick Faust added 19 points and five boards for the Terrapins (17-14), who have beaten Wake Forest six straight times in this tournament. James Padgett donated 10 points and five rebounds.

Maryland, which last won this tourney in 2004, will face top-seeded North Carolina in Friday’s quarterfinal round.

Travis McKie ended with 22 points and eight boards for the Demon Deacons (13-18), who were outscored by a 46-29 margin in the second half. Nikita Mescheriakov and C.J. Harris had 16 and 14 points, respectively.

It was a tight battle in the early going, with Wake Forest holding a 28-27 lead with 4:16 left in the first half. But Maryland ended the stanza on a 9-3 spurt to take a 36-31 margin into the break.

The Demon Deacons scored the first two points of the second half to pull within three. However, the Terrapins responded with a 20-2 run to take control. Stoglin tallied nine straight points during the middle stages of the surge, which Ashton Pankey capped with a jumper for a 56-35 lead with 14:05 to play.
