Famous MLK QuotesFamous MLK Quotes, Martin Luther King Jr., Baptist minister and civil rights activist, is a celebrated figure in American history. A master of oratory, King delivered many famous speeches, sermons and wrote letters that played a huge role in shaping American conscience and continue to inspire millions today.
1. “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal.’ I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today.” I Have A Dream, 1963

2. “From every mountainside, let freedom ring. When we let freedom ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God’s children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, ‘Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!'” I Have A Dream, 1963

3. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Hate multiplies hate, violence multiplies violence, and toughness multiplies toughness in a descending spiral of destruction…The chain reaction of evil — hate begetting hate, wars producing more wars — must be broken, or we shall be plunged into the dark abyss of annihilation.” Strength To Love, 1963

4. “I am coming to feel that the people of ill will have used time much more effectively than the people of goodwill. We will have to repent in this generation not merely for the vitriolic words and actions of the bad people, but for the appalling silence of the good people. We must come to see that human progress never rolls in on wheels of inevitability. It comes through the tireless efforts and persistent work of men willing to be co-workers with God, and without this hard work time itself becomes an ally of the forces of social stagnation. We must use time creatively, and forever realize that the time is always ripe to do right. Now is the time to make real the promise of democracy, and transform our pending national elegy into a creative psalm of brotherhood. Now is the time to lift our national policy from the quicksand of racial injustice to the solid rock of human dignity.” Letter From Birmingham Jail, 1963

5. “The church must be reminded that it is not the master or the servant of the state, but rather the conscience of the state.” Strength To Love, 1963

Martin Luther King Jr Quotes, (AFP) – From monuments to two presidents and a stone’s throw of a site for the soldiers of World War II, Washington is to get a new memorial honoring slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

The memorial of $ 120 million was still a construction site on Thursday, when Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, Representative Eleanor Holmes Norton and Washington Mayor Vincent Gray took an inspection tour to see how construction is progressing on site, which was sued by delays.

Broken pieces of wood piled up near the wall of polished stone on which 15 citations from the King will be enrolled.

Part of 28 feet (8.5 m) statue of the king was in place, looking through the waters of the Tidal Basin in memory to President Thomas Jefferson, but clouded lenses of photographers by scaffolding and mesh straps.

“They want to” hold “until the official opening of the site on 28 August,” said an official connected to memory, asking not to be named.

Thousands of people are expected to put out for the inauguration of the memorial, which falls on the 47th anniversary of the day the King gave his famous “I Have a Dream” speech on the National Mall in Washington.

Exactly three years before August 28, 2008, Barack Obama was officially put on the road to the White House, when he won the presidential nomination of the Democratic Party.

The King memorial was set to open in early 2009 but was delayed by everything from disputes over safety at the site of Greece’s economic collapse, which forced the nation EU maritime block on a commitment to carry the statue free of charge from China to the U.S. capital.

The 159 pieces of the statue finally arrived in August last year and have been grouped on the site of the memorial.

The fact that the statue was carved from white granite by sculptor Lei Yixin Chinese also sparked controversy; with American Masons complain that there were a lot of unemployed people “in their ranks who would have liked to work on the statue.

But on Thursday, teething was forgotten that officials visiting and Harry Johnson, director of the foundation responsible for building the memorial that sought to represent the site when it finally opens.

When that day comes, visitors can enter the site of the monument through a gap between two huge white stones.

The stone taken from the mound of stone to be set apart from the gate, and on the side of the stone facing the Tidal Basin is the imposing statue of a giant figure in American history United, Martin Luther King Jr.

Johnson called the gate of the “mountain of despair” and the stone bearing the likeness of King’s carved in it the “Stone of Hope,” both references to the civil rights leader said: “With this faith we will be able to distinguish the mountain of despair a stone of hope. ”

King defended nonviolence and direct action as methods to achieve social change, leading the Montgomery bus boycott in the 1950s segregated Alabama and mass protests in Birmingham, Alabama in 1963 that led the adoption of the Civil Rights Act a year later.

King was shot in Memphis, Tenn., in April 1968. The winner of the 1964 Nobel Peace was just 39 years.
