Martin Luther King Celebration, San Marcos and Texas State spent the extended weekend celebrating the activism, leadership and influence of Martin Luther King Jr. with walks and various events.  For those in the San Marcos area, residents gathered around the Hays County Courthouse to celebrate the holiday.

Chris Jones, former city council member, spoke in front of San Marcos City Hall Jan.16 in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
The Dunbar Heritage Association hosted a ceremony at 10:30 a.m. and invited the City of San Marcos to come together and listen to speakers.

Those in attendance included Chris Jones, career advisor for Texas State and former city council member, Terence Parker, assistant director of Retention Management and Planning at Texas State, Jude Prather, city council Place 2, and San Marcos Mayor Daniel Guerrero.

The San Marcos community also gave a plaque in appreciation to Harvey Miller, the President of the Dunbar Heritage Association. Though Miller was not in attendance, his plaque was accepted by his granddaughters Mylinda and Ramona.

Jones was complimentary of the celebration and said the it was a representation of Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream.

“I think it was phenomenal. If you think about the people and the program here, we’ve got the Martin Luther King dream marching,” Jones said. “Black people, white people and Hispanics. We had the Unitarian church minister praying, and they have a history of fighting for civil rights. To me, the celebrations were a representation of the dream.”

The march began at the Hays County Courthouse and ended at the Dunbar Recreation Center where a birthday reception took place.

Lucky Tomblin, a resident of San Marcos since 1967, marched with the crowd through the streets of the city. Tomblin has attended the Martin Luther King Jr. march several times before.

“It brings people together. It reminds us of the sacrifices Martin Luther King Jr. and his friends made,” Tomblin said. “It’s something we should never forget.”

Before the end of the ceremony, Brian Ferguson, a minister of San Marcos, gave the final speech and prayer. Standing in front of the county courthouse, he spoke to the crowd to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Ferguson said closed his speech by saying “let us pray with our feet as we march.”

While Texas State hosted a march on Jan. 17 in honor of Martin Luther King Jr., the university was not alone in celebrating the holiday in the area.

Darius Jones, mass communication senior, got involved in the celebrations for MLK day on campus by taking part in a walk. Jones said it is his second year of helping plan the MLK celebrations on campus.
