St Andrews Scotland

St Andrews Scotland:(Washington Post) —ST. ANDREWS, Scotland has the feeling that what is at the head of John Daly is like your pants: a large number of eddies, many of clashing colors. But it is quite possible that the most extreme on Daly these days is his clothes. His huge belly is gone, and he claims to be sober. Excess means for the settlement of Paisley.

It was surprisingly visible in the streets of St. Andrews in the opening of Thursday’s British Open in his robin egg blue hat, salmon pink shirt, purple vest and pants that seemed cheap motel curtains. But there was no drunken behavior-tank, no teeing off on a can of beer. It was just a plume of cigarette smoke witness – a persistent habit – and a series of cracks solid, charismatic off the tee, the sounds of the meeting of force easily. His first seven-birdie round of 66 was one of his more aggressive, but sound, performances in a major championship since winning the 1995 British Open here.

The guy who used to be known as “Wild Thing” appears to be in need of a new nickname. What do we say now?

“I do not know,” he said. “Suave thing?”

It is risky to say anything definitive about Daly, in view of the turns of your personal and professional life, heartbreaking dissipation, drunkenness, divorce, and compulsive gambling that led to a spate of 95-2004. But he can be in the midst of a genuine revival.

He stumbled through a disastrous 2008 in which injured ribs, was a six-month suspension from the PGA Tour for misconduct, and covered almost 300 pounds. In February of ’09 in an effort to get a grip on himself, he decided to undergo a gastric banding surgery. He says he has not had a drink since. Was allowed to see what kind of resistance and constant practice can do for a player whose talent is still rampant.

“I do not know. I have 44 years “he said.” I learned a lot. I’ve never run from my mistakes. I’ve always been honest with you and everyone around me. You know, is how to return. For me, I’m on a comeback. ”

Daly decided to undergo this procedure, which restricts the size of the stomach, after seeing his daughter to obey it and lose 100 pounds. He says he can not stand beer, or junk food.

“You just eat differently,” he says. “I can not eat as much junk bad as before.”

His weight has dropped to 195 pounds, and his favorite drink is Coca-Cola Light. His says he misses most is the whole milk, your stomach can not handle more.

“A girl who used to drink half a day,” he said. “When you was like a hangover like I used to be, it was great. He got rid of everything.”

Back in St. Andrews, which Daly called to the site of his great victory more sober, is clearly catering to him. He has to imagine what might be to feel that way again. On the way to the course, before he ever hit a shot, he told his girlfriend, Ana Cladakis, “I love this course. It’s home. I’m going to win this thing.”
