Manatee (animal), The Highway Patrol will work with other law enforcement on DUI check points in Manatee, the United Way of Manatee County is searching for a new executive director and animal services is looking for volunteer dog walkers.
1. The Florida Highway Patrol along with the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, Palmetto Police Department and Bradenton Police Department will conduct a comprehensive DUI checkpoint in in the 3600 block of Cortez Road on Friday beginning at 10:00 p.m. and ending Saturday at 3:00 a.m. In 2009 the Florida Highway Patrol worked 31 fatal crashes that resulted in 33 fatalities in Manatee County. Eight of these crashes involved a driver that was under the influence of alcohol or drugs that resulted in 9 deaths.

2.The United Way of Manatee County has hired a firm to begin a national search for a new Executive Director following last year’s retirement of Jerry Koontz, the organization’s long-time executive. The agency has contracted with MBJ Group Inc. to assist with recruiting and screening candidates. 3. Manatee County Animal Services is looking for dog walkers to come out to its Palmetto facility to take the dogs for a 30 minute walk. The dog walkers offer the animals a respite from their pens while walkers get great exercse for themselves. For more information e-mail volunteer Deanne Cochin at Deecochin@msn.com.

4. Don’t miss Saturday’s pep rally for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 5:00-7:30 p.m. on Old Main Street in Downtown Bradenton. There will be autograph sessions with players. Pirates’ Manager Clint Hurdle, Team President Frank Coonelly and Mayor Wayne Poston will be featured speakers. Family games, face-painting, prize giveaways, fantastic food and musical performances are other planned activities. Bradenton has been the Spring Training home of the Pirates since 1969. The Bradenton Marauders, Pittsburgh’s High-A affiliate, gave Bradenton a Florida State League presence in 2010.

5. To reduce the number of kittens born in Manatee County, The Humane Society of Manatee County Spay and Neuter Clinic is spaying 65 female cats for a special rate of $20 during the month of February, thanks to a “Beat the Heat” grant from PetSmart Charities®. The Humane Society Spay Neuter is one of 63 clinics committed to spaying 17,000 cats across the nation this month. The Spay and Neuter Clinic still has appointments to fill to reach its goal. Make an appointment for this $20 feline spay before the offer ends on Feb. 29.
