“Here I am, this new teacher, and they’re so welcoming, they’re so giving and kind,” said Rebecca Miller, 38, a breast cancer survivor who has taught second grade at Blessed Sacrament School for two years. “They hardly know who I am and they’re just so willing. It just says a whole lot about who they are and their integrity.”

The school on Monday presented Miller with the $850 it raised with a weeklong bake sale organized by eighth-graders Gabby Hickey and Morgan Hartenstein.

“We just hope that she knows that we care for her and our whole school cares for her and that we’re all here to support her,” Gabby said.

Morgan said she and Gabby came up with the bake sale idea as a way to help Miller after hearing she had breast cancer. They said they were near tears when presenting her with the money they raised.

“I think the coolest part was when we saw Mrs. Miller’s face,” Morgan said. “She was so touched and that was the best part.”

Miller was diagnosed with breast cancer in July and had a double mastectomy about five weeks ago, which she said has left her “completely clean.” She said she will use the school’s gift to pay off some medical bills, and the rest will go toward breast cancer awareness.

She described Gabby and Morgan as “wonderful girls” who “have their heart in the right place,” and thanked the school community for its support.

“It’s very heartwarming and I’m very lucky to be in such a great school, and to be involved in such a great community.”
