University Of Chicago, Chicago, Students at the University of Chicago are facing a serious problem: exploding toilets. The plumbing at Pierce Tower, one of the oldest dorms on campus, is so bad that sometimes toilets don’t flush. And that’s a good thing, because sometimes, on the other end of the spectrum, toilets explode.

FOX Chicago News didn’t find anyone who was actually sitting on a toilet when things went bad, but all the students who live in this dorm have a story about filthy urinals, sinks filled with backed-up sewage, and water that isn’t reliably hot or cold.

“Oh, you know — people go into flush toilets and have excrement exploding on them or the actual toilet exploding,” said resident Griffith Dennis.

“People get used to it, but it’s not just the toilets,” said resident Shelly Thei. “The water sometimes doesn’t come out. Sometimes there’s no hot water or it comes out yellow.”

The bathrooms are co-ed, and students said the 3rd, 4th and 6th floors are probably the worse, not just in the morning when most of the students are getting dressed for classes, but anytime.

“Contents would just erupt out of the toilet and the toilet itself would be ok,” James Ekstrom said. “But there were occasions in which the toilet itself, porcelain elements of it cracked and shattered.”

Some students have met with school officials to talk about their concerns. Others said said they have to laugh. It’s disgusting, but funny and they said they school officials are doing a good job at fixing the flush.
