Love Padlocks

December 14, 2011 by · Comments Off on Love Padlocks

Love Padlocks, It is a popular expression of undying love – a romantic couple write their name on a padlock, fasten it to one of Rome’s best known bridges and toss the key into the Tiber River.

But the declarations of everlasting love have earned the ire of authorities in the Eternal City, the Italian capital, who have decreed that the thousands of padlocks that now festoon the Ponte Milvio must be removed.

The local council that oversees the maintenance of the “bridge of love”, as it has been dubbed by Romans, voted overwhelmingly this week to send in workers with bolt cutters to get rid of the padlocks.

Councillors said the locks were unsightly and presented a danger to safety, with the risk that lamp posts and railings could collapse under the weight of the metal.

“It is mainly a question of security, but also of cleaning up the area, which has deteriorated,” said Gianni Giacomini, the president of the council.
