Lord's Resistance ArmyLord’s Resistance Army, Lord’s Resistance Army, formed in late 1980, is a sectarian religious and military group operating in northern Uganda and southern Sudan. He has committed numerous abuses and atrocities such as kidnapping, rape, mutilation and murder of civilians, including women and children, according to globalsecurity.org. Its members are known for piracy of the lips and ears of their victims, looting and burning the huts of the villages, and stealing clothes and medicines that terrorize communities, CNN reported.

On Friday, President Barack Obama announced he is sending about 100 U.S. troops to Africa to help prosecute the leaders of the group.

Lord’s Resistance Army has tried to overthrow the government of Uganda and has contributed to instability in the entire Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo and Southern Sudan.

It is led by Joseph Kony, who professes to have spiritual powers. He is often “underestimated” as a leader, according to a report in 2011 by Jane in the group. Kony has claimed to be possessed by spirits that dictate the group’s strategy. Jane notes that the tactic has served him well, allowing you to talk to fans who have mixed beliefs. By presenting themselves as a medium with supernatural abilities, his authority is made more difficult the question within the ranks.

U.S. military personnel will advise the regional task forces to guide Kony and other senior leaders. The president said the troops will not participate Kony forces “unless necessary for self-defense.”

Lord’s Resistance Army is sophisticated and less as the motley crew of fighters sometimes described as Jane says. It has benefited from the military experience of former military officers from Uganda and the years of fighting in Sudan.

International aid convoys and NGOs operating in the region have been threatened by the Lord’s Resistance Army, according to numerous reports. Watch New York-based Human Rights, in a letter published in May, urged the U.S. government to intensify its efforts to protect people in the group.
