Greenspan Mitchell Wedding 1997, Alan Greenspan may be able to send Wall Street scrambling with his merest utterance, but even he didn’t have enough power to stop the drizzle from dampening his wedding day.

Despite the inclement weather, though, the bride, NBC News correspondent Andrea Mitchell, pronounced the ceremony uniting her with the chairman of the Federal Reserve as “beautiful.”

“Neither of us forgot our lines,” quipped Mitchell. The couple met with reporters after the ceremony in front of the quaint Virginia countryside inn where they were married.

“The only variation that almost happened is that I was going to say ‘for rain or for shine,'” said Greenspan.

Wedding Culminates 12-Year Courtship
Washington’s newest power couple took their time getting to the altar. Greenspan, 71, and Mitchell, 50, met in 1983 when she interviewed him for a story. They started dating in 1984, and the relationship turned more serious in 1987 when he moved to Washington to chair the Fed. At the time, she covered the Reagan White House for NBC.

Mitchell is currently the network’s chief foreign affairs correspondent.

The 75 guests attending the ceremony was a veritable who’s who of Washington’s political and media circles. They included David Brinkley, Henry Kissinger, Katharine Graham of the Washington Post, Barbara Walters and U.S. Sen. John Warner (R-Va.)

Guests boarded chartered buses in downtown Washington to take them to the ceremony at the exclusive Inn at Little Washington, about an hour away in the village of Washington, Virginia.

Earlier in the week, Kissinger threw the couple a party in New York City, and ABC’s Sam Donaldson hosted a “stag” party for Mitchell and some of her fellow journalists.

Couple Brushes Off Request to Kiss
Greenspan and Mitchell smiled their way through a short meeting with reporters after the ceremony, accompanied by Mitchell’s 7-year-old goddaughter, Lauren Hunt, who served as flower girl.

For the ceremony, Mitchell chose a knee-length, cream-colored dress with a pillbox hat, while Greenspan wore a blue business suit.

Reporters good-naturedly tried to cajole the couple into a kiss before the cameras, but they swept their way back into the inn without obliging.
