Long Island Serial Killer

Long Island Serial Killer, It’s been almost a year now since police in New York first discovered four bodies near a Long Island beach. Since then, they’ve found another six sets of remains in the area. Now, they believe the killings are the work of a single serial killer.

Melissa Cann silently sings as she watches a montage of photos in tribute to her sister, Maureen, a mother of two. Maureen Brainard-Barnes is one of ten victims of a suspected serial killer who remains uncaptured after 15 years. Melissa says, “Someone that disregards human life… to keep on doing it over and over and over again. It’s horrible.”

Maureen Brainard-Barnes left her home in Norwich, Connecticut in 2007. She told her sister she had a weekend modeling job in New York City, and then vanished.

Three years later, in December 2010, police found her sister’s body wrapped in burlap. Her sister was told Maureen was strangled.

Three other women were also found murdered in the brush along the same isolated stretch of highway. Police say the killer chose his targets carefully, all in the sex trade. Melissa says, “I can’t even describe to myself how bad it feels to be, you know, a family member of one of these girls that was found.”

The family of Melissa Barthelemy in Buffalo, New York is also grieving and, like Cann, is not surprised that a single killer is now suspected. He used Barthelemy’s own cell phone seven times to taunt her little sister after she vanished. In one call, the family attorney says, the killer even confessed. Steve Cohen, the Barthelemy’s family attorney says, “He is cold. He is very precise. He is very disciplined. And he is the quintessential monster.”
