Leap Year Birthday

Leap Year Birthday, After a certain age, most women begin to dread birthdays, but not Juliet Kennedy.  The Olivehurst resident has been looking forward to today for years.

“I’m just excited because it’s double digits this year for the first time,” Kennedy said.

A leap year baby with the kind of recognition that rolls around only once every four years, Kennedy is finally turning 10. Like she has for much of the last two decades, she’ll be celebrating her Leap Year age instead of her calendar years.

“I sure as heck don’t want 40 candles on a cake,” she said.

Babies have a 1 in about 1,500 chance of being born on Feb. 29. Those who do say they often regard their birthdays as something special, even though they find a way to celebrate being born every year regardless of the date.

Come the end of February, Aerith House’s family always dotes on her with pizza parties, vacations and cake. But until today, it has all been more ceremonial than actual.

Born Feb. 29, 2008, Aerith is celebrating her “first” birthday today. Still a little young to understand the concept, she enjoyed a big party this weekend complete with balloons and a pi?ata and is pleased but a little confused as to why she gets cupcakes again today, said her grandmother, Jolie House, who has been raising Aerith since she was 5 months old.

“We’ve tried every year to do something special for her,” Jolie House said. “I don’t want her to miss out on anything. I want her to have everything most kids would have.”

Aerith’s mother was in labor with her for 17 hours, and while Jolie House was wishing for a Feb. 28 birthday, Aerith’s father had his fingers crossed for Leap Day.

In the end, her son’s hopes came true, and Aerith was born at 3:22 a.m., the first Leap Day baby of 2008 at Rideout Memorial Hospital.
