Lady Gaga Twitter Record, With help from her Little Monsters, Lady Gaga has gone and broken a Twitter record. The eccentric singer became the first person to have 20 million followers, which is two million more than Justin Bieber, who has the second most followed account at 18 million. Katy Perry comes in third with 15.7 million followers, and Shakira and Rihanna both have 14.5 million tweeters each.

Gaga has been the most followed person on Twitter since August 2010, when she overtook Britney Spears with 5.6 million followers.

One of the reasons Gaga is so popular is because she runs her own account, and many other celebrities employ publicists to handle their tweets. Since joining the site in March 2008, the “Poker Face” singer uses her Twitter to share information about her tours and new singles or albums. She also replies directly to her fans tweets.

When she reached 19 million followers on February 9, she tweeted,”19 Million Followers!!! HOLY HOOKER!!! *goes back to work*”

She recently was at Harvard University to launch her Born This Way foundation, which aims to empower young people and “challenge meanness and cruelty.” The singer has already made a $1.2 million personal contribution. Her mother, Cynthia Germanotta, who she said inspired her to start the foundation, will serve as its president.

Another celebrity who has thrown her support behind the Born This Way foundation is Oprah Winfrey, who was with Gaga at the Harvard University launch.
