Lady Gaga MadonnaLady Gaga Madonna, Lady Gaga and Madonna are very similar in many ways; both are from Italian descent, both are from New York and both are powerhouse women. But do the similarities end there?

When Lady Gaga’s hit single ‘Born This Way’ zoomed to number one in the charts, critics accused her of emulating Madonna’s 1989 hit ‘Express Yourself’. Gaga herself was quick to deny the claims.

“I will look you in your eyes and tell you that I am not dumb enough or moronic enough to think that you are dumb enough or moronic enough not to see that I would have stolen a melody. If you put the songs next to each other, side by side, the only similarities are the chord progression,” she told NME.

However, Madonna has finally given her opinion on the comparisons, admitting to Cynthia McFadden that she felt ‘Born This Way’ sounded “familiar” when she first heard it.

“I certainly think she references me a lot in her work. And sometimes I think it’s amusing and flattering and well done.”

And, whilst she at first remained very complimentary about the ‘Poker Face’ singer, she eventually let her true feelings bubble to the surface when quizzed about ‘Born This Way’…

“It felt reductive.”

Ooooh. For those of us, like Cynthia McFadden, who aren’t sure on the meaning of the word ‘reductive’, it can basically be broken down as meaning ‘minimal’ or ‘crude’. That’s not exactly the critique we imagine Lady Gaga was hoping for…
