Lady Antebellum, Henryville High School was almost completely wiped out when the town of Henryville, Ind. was pummeled by a series of tornadoes March 2.

But because of the overwhelming support of some nearby teenagers, the students of Henryville High will be serenaded in an exclusive performance by country superstars Lady Antebellum.

Just before Henryville was hit by the tornado, Lady Antebellum announced its “Own the Prom Night” contest, in which one lucky school could win a private concert by the country group, who would perform at the school’s prom.

Lady Antebellum posted a video on their website today, announcing that Henryville High was the winning school. ”We were really really touched by this submission,” the group said. “And we cannot wait to be a part of your prom.”

But the submission they were referring to was not actually submitted by Henryville. It was a video from the students of neighboring Silver Creek High School that grabbed Lady Antebellum’s attention.

“Don’t get me wrong, we would love to have you at our prom,” one student said in the video submission. “But there’s another school in the West Clark family who deserves it more than any other school in the country.”

Lady Antebellum Prom, Country music group Lady Antebellum has chosen Henryville, Ind., as the winner of its “Own the Night” prom contest, announcing Tuesday that it will play a special concert May 16 in Louisville, Ky., for juniors and seniors whose high school was crushed by one of the March 2 tornadoes.

Schools from as far away as northern Wisconsin submitted YouTube videos urging the country trio to choose Henryville.

“After carefully reviewing each submission, the trio unanimously chose the community of Henryville, IN., for their story, resilience and unity following devastating tornadoes earlier this month,” the group’s website says.

“Not only was their own submission moving, but schools across the country spontaneously submitted videos … in support of Henryville receiving the special concert, including the winning submission from Silver Creek High School,” in nearby Sellersburg, Ind., the website says.

But because of a previously scheduled commitment, the group won’t be able to attend Henryville’s scheduled prom on April 27, according to the website.

Instead, the band will throw a larger event May 16 in Louisville for the school’s juniors and seniors, followed by a benefit for the tornado-stricken community. Details will be shared in a few days, the website says.

Amy Fischmer, a Henryville art teacher and co-sponsor of the junior class, which organizes the prom, said a wave of excitement was spreading through the community as students found out about Lady Antebellum’s decision Tuesday. The students aren’t disappointed that the band won’t play their prom, she said.

“They get double parties,” Fischmer said. “What teenager doesn’t like that?”
