Jake Plummer

Jake Plummer, Mike Shanahan slanting sense of why he bench quarterback Donovan McNabb (Notes) not only looks like an impostor, but also a parody of an earlier logic he uses in training camp with a player to very high level.

For those with short memories, defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth (notes) has repeatedly been forced to take a fitness test at the beginning of camp to prove he was in a cardiovascular condition adequate. Haynesworth has been the only player from Washington, which had to do. Without an account piecemeal this situation, here is a quote from Shanahan in July explaining why Haynesworth has been awarded.

“It’s part of being in the program during the offseason,” Shanahan said. “You do not have to pass the test [if you go in the offseason]. There are a certain percentage of workouts that you have to be here, and if you’re in that percentage, you do not have to go through the fitness test, because we knew that you’re in good shape. You had this test in a large number of different exercises running en route. ”

So how is it that McNabb is now suddenly out of shape? By this declaration, McNabb was shaped early in training camp. He then went into training camp and practiced all season.

Yet suddenly he cannot get enough breath to call two plays in the caucus, then achieve them?

While Shanahan’s son, Kyle – Redskins offensive coordinator – tried to bring clarity on Tuesday most likely explanation is that the brilliant but strategically-challenged management Shanahan again mishandling of a situation quarter. Since John Elway retired after Shanahan and the Broncos won back-to-back Super Bowls, Shanahan has been looking for another great passing. His research has been an interesting study of management techniques.

In 1999, he surprised many veterans of Denver where he made a second-year man Brian Griese (notes) the starter at the last minute Bubby Brister. After four seasons, Griese fell into disgrace and acquis Shanahan Jake Plummer (notes). After four seasons, Plummer fell into disgrace and acquis Shanahan Jay Cutler (notes), possibly Plummer Taking a loss on Thanksgiving Day road against Kansas City after the transition to telegraph the news.

Privately, Brister, Griese and Plummer say that Shanahan’s jerky around.

Now it seems that McNabb became the latest member of the League of Shanahan quarterbacks disillusioned. Ultimately, however, the common denominator of this group is not something about their ability. Rather, it is managed.

In short, if Shanahan wants to maintain credibility with the players, he must begin to reflect on what he does. He can not say something as ridiculous as his explanation on Sunday that Rex Grossman (notes) was better prepared to manage the drilling of two minutes McNabb – McNabb could be signed five minutes before a match and it would be a better option for a drill Two minutes Grossman never will – and change history tomorrow.

Like so many coaches who are challenged to deliver a message (see Brad Childress with Randy Moss (notes)), Shanahan should have been man enough to say McNabb exactly what was wrong. The fact is that McNabb has not played that well this season. He has seven touchdowns and eight interceptions and his rating shift of 76.0 is the worst of his career 12 years since he was a rookie. The offense was held to less than 20 points in five of eight games.

Some questions are about McNabb and some are on the fact that the team around him is limited. The Redskins offensive line is a work in progress (seven sacks against Detroit is bad). The balloon position was not only a joke in the offseason (the collection of retreads Clinton Portis (grades) Larry Johnson (notes) and “Slow” Willie Parker (notes) was absurd, even then) but it became a MASH unit now with Ryan Torain (Notes) being the last to descend.

Receiver is not much better, led by the largely overrated Santana Moss (notes). He is the NFL’s version of Donyell Marshall, who produced stats because he plays on most teams had a bad one better. The value of the skills that the player’s position is much tight end Chris Cooley (notes), but it’s not as if he were a world like the drummer Antonio Gates (notes).

The fact is, Shanahan is McNabb the scapegoat for a poor season (as if 4-4 at the midpoint of the season was not a sufficient improvement to the Redskins). As quickly as Shanahan put together this collection of veterans, now he wants to pull all out. Here’s a prediction: By this time next year, McNabb will play for the Arizona Cardinals and the Redskins will be at their next solution under Shanahan.

The problem is that Shanahan needs to find a plan, it can stick to a plan, and it can really be with so he can show his immense talent as a playmaker and manager of game
