260xStoryKaty vs Abilene:SAN ANTONIO – The talk heading into Katy’s state championship game against Abilene on Saturday at the Alamodome surrounded the Eagles’ running back Herschel Sims. It was his cousin, Ronnell who stole the show though, and led Abilene to a 28-17 win over Katy and a Class 5A Division II State Championship.

The loss ended the Tigers pursuit of a third consecutive Class 5A state championship.

Abilene took control almost immediately when Ronnell Sims broke free for a 47-yard touchdown just 29 seconds into the game. The Eagles took a 14-0 lead when Sims found a hole again, this time for 11 yards.

It was clear Katy’s defense was having trouble with Abilene’s speed.

In the beginning of the second quarter, Abilene threatened to go up another score, but Katy’s defense stopped the Eagles on a fourth-and-one on Katy’s 11 for a turnover on downs.

On the ensuing drive, Katy successfully converted a fake punt for 16 yards when Joey Champman took off running on a fourth-and-five from the Abilene 46. On that drive, Katy ended up scoring when Donovonn Young leaped 2 yards into the end zone.

The Tigers went into the half trailing 14-7.

Midway through the third quarter, Katy scored on a 25-yard field goal. The Tigers got into the Abilene redzone again in that quarter, but failed to score and turned the ball over on downs at the Abilene 22.

Sims proved to be too much for Katy again at the beginning of the fourth quarter, when the junior led his Eagles down the field again and scored on a 9-yard run to make it 21-10.

The Eagles sealed things in the fourth quarter when Herschel Sims had his first big run of the night — a 60-yard touchdown run.

Despite the loss, Katy still goes down in the books as one of the most successful 5A team in the decade with 132 total wins and four state titles between 2000-2009.
