Kate Middleton Black DressKate Middleton Black Dress, Kate Middleton turned heads at the Sun’s Military Awards in London this week, wearing a glamorous long black velvet strapless dress with a fishtail, designed by Sarah Burton of the Alexander Mcqueen fashion label. Not only did the Duchess look stunning in the outfit, which was apparently given to her – along with accompanying jewellery – as a wedding present, but the dress also drew yet more comparison to Princess Diana.

Keen observers have compared the floor-length dress, which The Duchess of Cambridge had to keep lifting to prevent it from trailing on the ground, to a black strapless dress designed for Diana in 1981 by the designers David and Elizabeth Emanuel. There are further similarities to a black off-the-shoulder dress that Princess Di wore to the White House in 1985, where she was pictured dancing with John Travolta. Kate was accompanied to the ceremony by her husband, Prince William and his younger brother Prince Harry.

Kate Middleton Black DressKate Middleton Black Dress, When Kate stepped out in a gorgeous £4000 Alexander McQueen gown for the Sun’s Military Awards bash in London, comparisons were made to an outfit Princess Diana wore back in 1981.

For Diana’s first public engagement with Prince Charles, a fundraiser at The Royal Opera House, she also opted for a black gown with a ruffled edge, although it was made of satin instead of velvet like Kate’s.

Despite being just 19 at the time, Diana made headlines around the world and the media began their obsession with her immaculate style.

Diana’s gown was created by Elizabeth and David Emmanuel, who went on to design her infamous wedding dress, which sold at auction for £192,000 to a fashion museum in Chile last year.

Elizabeth Emanuel said of the outfit: ‘The transformation was incredible. She arrived looking like the nursery school teacher she was, but now she looked like a movie star.’

And the accessory both ladies opted for to complement their outfits? The very same diamond and sapphire engagement ring.
