Jo Yeates’ Landlord, CLIFTON landlord Chris Jefferies was due to give evidence today at a judicial inquiry into media ethics.

Mr Jefferies, who was wrongly arrested on suspicion of the murder of Joanna Yeates earlier this year, was due to speak at the Leveson Inquiry alongside singer Charlotte Church and broadcaster Anne Diamond today.

Prime Minister David Cameron set up the Leveson Inquiry in July in response to revelations that the now-closed national newspaper News of the World commissioned a private detective to hack Milly Dowler’s phone after she disappeared in 2002.

The first part of the inquiry, sitting at the Royal Courts of Justice in London, is looking at the culture, practices and ethics of the press in general.

The second part, examining the extent of unlawful activities by journalists, will not begin until detectives have completed their investigation into alleged phone hacking and corrupt payments to police, and any prosecutions have been concluded.

Earlier this summer Mr Jefferies received damages from a number of national newspapers who defamed his character when, last December, he was arrested on suspicion of killing Miss Yeates, who rented a flat with her boyfriend from him on Canynge Road.

He was subsequently released without charge and declared “entirely innocent” by judges in the cases brought against the national newspapers.

Miss Yeates’ killer, Dutchman Vincent Tabak, was sentenced to a minimum of 20 years in jail after being found guilty of her murder at Bristol Crown Court last month.

The Daily Mirror and Sun newspapers were also fined for contempt of court in relation to their coverage of Mr Jefferies’ arrest.
