The days following Christmas are proving to be busy ones for Maryville retailers. Year-end clearance sales signs are popping up all over town as store managers seek to lure deal-savvy customers into stores and shops.

JC Penney’s held a “door-buster” sale December 26 and will continue to offer discounts until its winter inventory is sold.

Customers can expect discounts of 70 percent and more on such items as footwear, denim clothing and coats.

“With limited income, people don’t buy as much,” JC Penney Manager Janese Schaffer said. “It seems like they put more thought into their gifts instead of making impulse buys.”

Careful shoppers have resulted in fewer returns and more post-Christmas purchases, said Schaffer, who added that the Maryville store doubled its sales this year compared to Dec. 26, 2010.

“We really appreciate every customer that comes through our doors,” she said. “We know that they have a lot of choices, and these days it is nothing to drive to St. Joseph or Kansas City. We are glad that so many people chose to shop here.”

Holly Cronk, Skidmore, said she took advantage of coupons and mark-downs offered by merchants while shopping with her daughter Haley.

“It’s fun because we are on break,” Cronk said. “You never know what you’ll find, plus it beats sitting at home.”

Maurice’s clothing store in Maryville is also using an aggressive sales strategy to attract year-end shoppers, marking some items down as much as 50 percent.

Sales the day before and the day after Christmas were up from last year, according to Assistant Manager Fran Daugherty.

Discounted items include winter clothing, and Daugherty said that many of the day-after-Christmas purchases were made using gift cards.

“We have a lot of people who just come back for the holidays,” Daugherty said. “They tell us that they come in to the store every time they are back in town.”

Clothing stores are not the only businesses going after post-Christmas bargain hunters.
