Japanese Ghost Ship

Japanese Ghost Ship, Japanese fishing vessel Ryou-Un Maru showing significant signs of damage after the Coast Guard cutter Anancapa fires explosive ammunition into it, 180 miles west of the southeast Alaskan coast.

UNLEASHING cannon shot like in naval battles of old, a U.S. Coast Guard cutter sunk a Japanese ghost ship that had been adrift since the March 2011 earthquake-triggered tsunami.

The 164-foot Ryou-Un Maru was destined to be junked on the Japanese island of Hokkaido when the tsunami’s fury swept it out into the Pacific – a fraction of the estimated 5 million tons of flotsam from the national tragedy.

Having drifted into the Gulf of Alaska, an important shipping lane between Asia and North America, officials ordered it to be sent to the bottom Thursday, about 180 miles from the Alaskan coast.
