Supercharged Scooter, A ‘SOUPED-UP’ mobility scooter capable of a terrifying 60mph has been impounded after the rider was caught racing it across fields in South Yorkshire.

A 24-year-old man, from Bentley, Doncaster, is now faced with paying Doncaster Council to get back his pride and joy, which is estimated to have cost £5,000 to convert from a standard disability scooter.

It was seized in fields at the end of Pickering Road, near Bentley Community Woodland, after residents complained about it.

The machine appears to have been fitted with a 140cc engine, probably taken from a go-kart or motorcycle, with the wheels also coming from a go-kart.

It also has two ‘wheelie bars’ sticking out of the back to stop it tipping over.

One of the officers who seized it from the owner said: “It looks like a go-kart with a bigger seat.”

The racing disability scooter will not be crushed if the owner pays the storage fee but he will be advised to ride it on licensed tracks.

If he is caught again he will be prosecuted.

The speedy scooter was spotted racing around fields at up to 60mph, scaring wild deer and other animals as well as annoying residents who live nearby.

Coun Cynthia Ransome, council cabinet member for communities, said: “While it may look like a lot of fun to ride, this type of noisy vehicle annoys residents immensely and terrifies local wildlife and walkers.
