Ironman Kona, Hello and welcome to the blog where you can track the triathlon, the biggest event of the participant, the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii. For the next 15 hours I will be monitoring 10 people in Iowa, which will stand the test of endurance athletes of 1800. The list includes professionals TJ Tollakson, Tim DeBoom and male amateur Justin Herrick, Steve Feltz, Louis DeWilde, Mike Morrison, Doug Vander Weide, Ron Ottaway Gilllotti and Marc (who now lives in Boulder, Colorado) and female amateur Carrie Morton. Ten is the most Iowa has never been to the Ironman. If you know someone with a connection Iowan, send a message and I’ll follow him or her too.

Professionals, and Tollakson DeBoom, will first go at 11:30 CST. DeBoom, Cedar Rapids, is the 2001 champion and 2002 Ironman Hawaii. Tollakson, a former athlete preparation Ankeny Des Moines is competing in his fourth Ironman Hawaii. He finished 30th in his debut Kona in 2007, 251st in 2008 and 36th last year.

The fans start at noon CST.

All triathletes for a distance of 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike and 26.2 mile run. It’s more difficult one-day event of endurance sport in the world. Professionals will need at least 8 hours to cover the distance, while most amateurs will need 12 hours.

The weather in Kona is currently 71 degrees, with high should be 83. That is, not too bad of OSA weather for Hawaii.

Professsional and are off in the 2.4 mile swim! The first update I’m having is on Tollakson DeBoom and after swimming.

We Äôve already had great news this morning when Chrissie Wellington had abandoned the race with a disease that came up Friday. She was the favorite among women, race participant.

It is the largest pro field, 121, that we may never see Äôll in Kona. Next year, the pro field will be limited to 50 men and 30 women pro pro. So the pressure is on and Tollakson DeBoom to produce a good result and provide an entry next year.

Andy Potts and Pete Jacobs are leading swimming with Rasmus Henning, Chris McCormack and Faris Al-Sultan in a group of hunting 40 yards back.

Potts has now opened a gap on Jacobs.

Potts has a big lead over Jacobs and group hunting at dawn.

And the 1,700 fans, including eight Iowans are off!

Andy Potts, a regular at the Hy-Vee Triathlon, is out of the water first in 48:48.

DeBoom, competing, as a 40-year-old is 17th after the swim in 51:34. The old man again! He now lives in Boulder, Colorado

Tollakson is 66th after swimming in a big bag. His time was 51:36.

DeBoom moved to 16 after passing the 112-mile bike and finished 20th after Tollakson T1. DeBoom, transition time of the participant was Tollakson 1:49 ET, AOS T1 time is 1:51.
