Uruguay vs Germany: (New York Times (blog)) — Germany took third place in South Africa 2010 with a 3-2 victory over Uruguay in an entertaining match in Port Elizabeth on Saturday night.

Ten minutes later, Diego Perez stripped Schweinsteiger in the center circle and found Luis Suarez on the counter. Edinson Cavani Suarez fed that struck the equalizer past Hans-Joerg Butt.

Diego Forlan gave a brief Uruguay advantage early in the second half with a flurry of slender legs beside a cross Egidio Arevalo Rios, but two defensive errors were decisive for the Germans. Marcell Jansen head was equipped with a corner kick in the 56th minute, while Sami Khedira headed home another corner eight minutes from time.

Is this a cruel and unusual punishment, this match for third place? After the anguish of a semifinal loss, how it feels jilted the duo playing on another 90 minutes to determine which nation leads the best in others? Whenever there is a lobby that argues for the removal of this artifact comfort, but the reality is, the playoffs for third place continues to attract a crowd, the TV still shows the games, and indeed often produce some matches quite well – certainly more open games, often to the final.
Today’s contestants, Germany and Uruguay, met in a match for third place 40 years ago. Wolfgang Overath gave the West Germans (as they were then) a 1-0 victory. Please take a look at the highlights here:

That was back in the day. Today’s meeting is the usual mix of bench players looking to make their mark in the future, alongside the big names who are still waiting to make their mark on posterity.
